Get ready for an unforgettable journey to Papua New Guinea with Janet’s Journeys! We’re thrilled to offer a unique experience at the Mount Hagen Festival, an annual cultural extravaganza in the vibrant city of Mount Hagen.

As one of the largest tribal gatherings in the country, this famous festival is a tapestry of diverse traditions, languages, and customs, showcasing the incredible cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea. And we’re giving just FIVE lucky people the chance to be part of this extraordinary adventure!

Accommodation

Throughout our stay in Papua New Guinea, we will stay in local hotels and guest houses. All rooms on all trips are shared, with                               2 people in each room. 

NOTE: The festival takes place in a small town in rural Papua New Guinea. If signing up please be aware of this and know this is not a luxury tour. We are paying for access to this unique part of the world and the tribes that live here.

Itinerary

August 15th: Arrival into Port Moresby & Mt Hagen

Start your adventure by landing in Port Moresby and catching a connecting flight to Mt Hagen. After settling in, we’ll have a group dinner to kick off our week of exploration and discuss the incredible experiences awaiting us.

August 16th: Pre-show at Kingalri Village

Dive into the festivities with a pre-show at Kingalri Village, offering a taste of the vibrant costumes and cultures that define the tribes. Your guide will provide insights, setting the stage for the cultural immersion ahead.

August 17th: Mount Hagen Festival (Day 1)

Immerse yourself in the renowned Mount Hagen Cultural Show. With nearly 100 tribes converging, you’ll witness captivating performances of traditional singing and dancing. Get ready for a visual feast of vibrant costumes,face paint, rhythmic dances, and lively chants.

There will only be a handful of international tourists and many locals, this is truly a ONCE IN A LIFETIME experience to be able to attend this very unique festiavl.

August 18th: Mount Hagen Festival (Day 2)

The festival continues with traditional performances, local entertainers, and a showcase of arts and crafts. Engage with local communities, learning about their lives, traditions, and stories. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the heart of Papua New Guinea.

 

August 19th: Tour to Mt Hagen Villages

Embark on a highland adventure, delving deep into local villages. Witness daily life, interact with locals, and gain a profound understanding of their unique culture and lifestyle.

 

 

August 20th: Tour Around Mt Hagen and Transfer to Goroka

Explore the surroundings of Mt Hagen before travelling on to Simbu and arriving in Goroka. Enjoy an overnight stay, preparing for further highland explorations.

August 21st: Tour Around Goroka

Today we go on a tour around Goroka, stopping at villages to learn about local traditions, and enjoying lunch at traditional restaurants. This is a town in the mountainous highlands of the country and is also home to some very unqiue tribes!

We can get the chance to visit the J.K McCarthy Museum, which is made up of several rooms showcasing everything from WWII relics and traditional Papua New Guinea objects. 

 

August 22nd: Departure

Wrap up this immersive 7-night, 8-day program with a transfer to Goroka airport, connecting to a flight back to Port Moresby. Depart with a sense of fulfillment, having experienced the epic Mount Hagen Festival, seeing an unexplored part of the world.  It’s a journey of a lifetime, and you’ve been part of something extraordinary!

Your deposit is non-refundable.
For the balance of your payment, I can refund you the full amount (minus your deposit) up to 8 weeks before the trip begins should you have an emergency/illness / need to cancel.
Anything closer than 8 weeks, I cannot refund you. I suggest you take out travel insurance that covers trip cancellations, that way should something happen like you get Covid, you will get a full payout from your insurance company.
