Itinerary

Day 1 - Tripoli & Sabratha

Welcome to Libya!

You’ll be met at Tripoli Airport by your guide and transferred straight to Sabratha for a full-day excursion. Sabratha was one of three cities that gave the Tripolis region its name, and its Roman Theatre is one of the finest in the world.

After exploring the ruins, we head back to Tripoli for the night.

Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2 - Jebel Nafusa Mountains

An early start as we leave Tripoli and head into the Jebel Nafusa mountains. Along the way, we stop at Gaser Alhaj, a 13th-century fortified granary that looks like something out of a film set, plus a few more gems dotted through the mountains.

We continue on through Turmesa and Kabaw before reaching the edge of the great Sahara sand sea for sunset. Then into Ghadames for the night, a UNESCO World Heritage oasis town that has been a trading hub since ancient times.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 - Ghadames

Today, we get to explore Ghadames, the Jewel of the Desert. The old town is a UNESCO-listed oasis town and is a labyrinth of covered alleyways, whitewashed mud-brick houses, and centuries of Berber history. It was designed to keep the heat out and the community close, and walking through it feels like stepping into another era entirely. We will stay here overnight.

This is one of those places that very few travellers ever make it to. Soak it in.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4 - Nalut

We leave Ghadames and make our way back towards Tripoli, stopping in Nalut along the way. Nalut gives a window into more recent Libyan history, and the Qasr Nalut granary, perched up high with panoramic desert views, is worth every step of the climb.

Back to Tripoli for the evening.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 5 - Leptis Magna

Today is a big one. We will have a full-day excursion to Leptis Magna. Leptis Magna is one of the most well-preserved Roman cities in the world, and it gets a fraction of the visitors that Pompeii or the Colosseum do. The sites we’ll visit:

  • Triumphal Arch of Septimius Severus
  • The Hippodrome
  • The Hadrianic Baths
  • The Amphitheatre
  • The Basilica
  • The Temples of Hercules and Roma
  • The Severn Forum

This is the birthplace of Emperor Septimius Severus; this place will seriously mess with your sense of scale.

Then we will head back to Tripoli for the night.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6 - Tripoli

We spend the day exploring old Tripoli, markets, souks and museums.

The Old Medina is a proper sensory experience, with Souqs selling everything from spices to silverware, the 2,000-year-old Arch of Marcus Aurelius standing in the middle of the city like it owns the place, beautiful mosques, a fish market, and the Red Castle overlooking the harbour.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7 - Departure Day

Sadly, it’s departure day 🙁

But not before we spend the morning exploring Tripoli before you fly home. The Old Medina is a proper sensory experience: souqs selling everything from spices to silverware, the 2,000-year-old Arch of Marcus Aurelius standing in the middle of the city like it owns the place, beautiful mosques, a fish market, and the Red Castle looking out over the harbour.

Then it’s transfers to the airport. Transfer will be arranged, and off you go, with a trip that almost nobody else will have done!

See you at the next one!

Meals Included: Breakfast

FAQ & Itinerary Note:

This itinerary, as always, is open to small changes depending on the weather, flights, etc. Fear not, if we have to make any adjustments, it will be to swap something out with an equally, if not better, experience!

Please note: this trip begins and ends in Tripoli.

I'm ready! How do I book?

Ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure in Libya? Click the BOOK NOW button to head to our payment portal and secure your spot with a €750 deposit. You’ll pay the remaining balance in cash (€1300) on arrival.

Why are deposits non-refundable?

The deposit for your trip is non-refundable due to several important factors. Firstly, when you book a spot, we immediately begin the process of planning and preparing for your journey. This involves engaging staff who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure every aspect of your trip is meticulously organised. These preparations often involve upfront costs that are incurred from the moment your booking is confirmed. Additionally, by requiring a non-refundable deposit, we aim to ensure that all participants are committed to the trip.

We understand that plans can change, which is why we insist all travellers have trip insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances that might affect their ability to participate.

What about my other payments? Are they refundable?

All payments, except your deposit, are fully refundable three months prior to the departure date.

We strongly recommend all travellers have travel insurance so that they can refund your deposit should your plans change. At the end of the day, we are a small business, and we want nothing more than to continue showing our guests the world. We hope you understand the importance of adhering strictly to this policy.

Will visiting Libya affect future travels to USA?

Visiting Libya does mean you are not eligible to get an ESTA for the USA, but it’s straightforward to apply for a visa at your closest US embassy. It will cost you €100+ and the visa lasts for 10 years. Visiting countries like Iraq, Libya & Afghanistan do not prevent you from travelling to the USA, they simply stop you from getting an ESTA. Once you’ve secured the visa it’s valid for 10 years and you can continues to visit countries on Trump’s “naughty list”.

How much money will I need for non-included meals, alcohol, and souvenirs?

All meals throughout the trip are included, but drinks are not. You can expect to pay €1–3 for soft drinks or juice. Libya is a dry country, so alcohol is completely banned for sale, consumption, or import. So be sure not to bring any to the country!

Libya’s markets are filled with unique finds, from handmade ceramics and jewellery to traditional textiles and leather goods. Some travellers barely spend a thing, others go a bit wild in the souqs. Most vendors prefer cash, so it’s worth having some local currency (Libyan Dinar) on hand for shopping.

How does tipping work?

To keep things smooth and stress-free, we will collect a kitty of €50-100 at the beginning of the trip. This ensures that all of our incredible on-the-ground vendors are taken care of, including guides, drivers, meals, and activities listed in your itinerary.

For any additional meals or personal expenses not included in the itinerary, you should expect to pay a separate tip. We will guide you on what is appropriate throughout the trip so you feel confident and comfortable.

How physically demanding is the trip?

The trip is moderate in terms of physical demand. Most days involve walking around archaeological sites and old cities, Leptis Magna and Ghadames in particular, cover a lot of ground on foot, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. There’s no hiking or strenuous activity as such, but you’ll be on your feet for long stretches most days.

The main thing to prepare for is the heat. Libya in May can hit 30°C+, so the combination of sun and walking can tire you out faster than expected.

Overall, anyone in reasonable health should be absolutely fine. It’s more of a culturally immersive trip than a physically challenging one.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

Absolutely! Libya’s cuisine offers something for everyone, and dietary needs are easily accommodated.

Let us know your dietary requirements ahead of time, and we’ll ensure your meals are tailored to your needs.

What if I want my own room?

We believe that rooming is one of the best parts of the experience. It feels a little like adult summer camp and has always been a highlight for our guests, with nothing but positive feedback in the past.

That being said, if you feel that sharing does not suit your travel style, we are happy to discuss the option of a single room supplement. Simply reach out to us at janetsgrouptrips@gmail.com and we will do our best to accommodate you.

What are the health and vaccination requirements?

None are required, but feel free to consult with your GP or a travel doctor if you want.

Some travellers like to pack anti-diarrhoea medication as a precaution, especially if trying unfamiliar foods. Staying hydrated and practising good hygiene, such as using hand sanitiser and drinking bottled water, will help you stay comfortable and healthy throughout the trip.

Who’s leading the trip?

A Janet’s Journey representative and an expert local tour guide will be with you every step of the way.
